John Brummett today reveals he'd asked the Highway Department about comparative costs on repairing the Broadway Bridge versus replacing it.
I asked the Highway Department about the relative cost of repair versus replacement. Officials there didn’t know. The engineers merely decreed pre-emptively that repair, while not impossible, and while not necessarily as expensive, was not “viable.”
He suggests taxpayers, during tough times, deserve more detailed information and a better explanation. It might be replacement is the better option for the long term, but that doesn't mean this moment is the best time to blow the $45 million on hand, plus the possible overages. We're still working on drawing the highway department out on this question.
