Of course Mike Huckabee was ready with a shoot-from-the-lip response to President Obama's decision to stop defending the indefensible Defense of Marriage Act.
Not-so-straight shooting, as usual. Said Huckabee:
Likely Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee mauled President Obama's decision to halt the Justice Department's legal defenses of DOMA at a roundtable lunch with reporters on Wednesday. In defense of his position, he claimed a public mandate for the controversial Clinton-era law, and linked same sex marriage to the failure of heterosexual marriages.
... Huckabee opposes gay marriage on the grounds that, according to him, it destroys traditional families.
"There is a quantified impact of broken families," Huckabee said.
So, let's see. We have a federal law discouraging same-sex marriage. Many states have made it illegal. Arkansas, with the Huckacox team leading the charge, was an early adopter of discrimination against same-sex couples.
You know the punch line:
Arkansas — same-sex marriage-free (except for the occasional couple that got hitched elsewhere) — has the second-highest divorce rate in the country. Only divorce-destination Nevada beats us. The divorce rate is higher still (highest rate in the country, by one report) in much-more-godly Northwest Arkansas, where Republican family values prevail and queer liberals best not let the sun set on them. Divorce rates are also significantly higher among evangelical Christians. In Arkansas, the number of people married three times or more is double the national average.
Gays did this to Arkansas, of course. It's only proof of the genius of their stealth agenda that I can't show you how.
Really. Is there anyone full of more hooey than Mike Huckabee?
