I see common sense prevailed — on a tie vote that Mayor Mark Stodola declined to break — at the Little Rock Board of Directors last night. They declined to approve an ordinance to prohibit the naming of streets for living people. This was a reaction to a controversial naming proposal of the doughty civic activist Annie Abrams. Mrs. Abrams withdrew herself from consideration, so that issue was off the table.
I'd favored this outcome several days ago. There are occasions when the city might want to honor a living person. Bill Clinton was a good example. The board will know that opportunity when it arises. It shouldn't be bound by blanket prohibitions.
