Jonathan Chavez, the UA Honors College student who has been detained in Florida by Immigration and Customs Enforcement for nearly two months, is free on $1,000 bond and is headed back to Fayetteville to resume his studies.

The Times has been following Chavez' situation in print and on the blog. Briefly: Chavez moved to Rogers with his parents as a teen-ager but never obtained legal residency, though his parents and sister did. He is a senior majoring in music at the U of A with a 3.8 gpa and is a volunteer with a campus ministry. He had traveled to Florida by bus to see his mother for Christmas when he was caught in an ICE roundup, when agents check persons at random. He was detained there until last Friday.

Sandra Lambert, Chavez' attorney in Fort Lauderdale, said she got a call from ICE informing her that he'd be released. A bond hearing had been set for Feb. 17. She said she did not know what prompted ICE to bond Chavez out, but said it could be because he's requested a deferral in proceedings to send him back to the country of his birth, Peru, or because of the publicity in his case.

Chavez "is an all-around good kid," Lambert said, the kind of person "deferred action is intended for."

Since his release, Jonathan has posted on the Facebook page "Praying for Jonathan Chavez," created by his friends and supporters:

I am beyond blessed to have you all as my friends. Thank you for all the support and prayers. I am with my family enjoying some amazing peruvien food. I am beyong amazed of what Jeus can do. All glory be to him. Best winter break I ever had. I was able to share God's love, how great is that? I'll be back home next week. Thanks for everything!!! Right now, however, I am beyond tire. I will have more news tomorrow. God bless you all! Love ya! To him, for him and through him are all things, to HIM be the glory forever.
