We all knew Jay Dickey was tight with the NRA when he represented the Fourth Congressional District. The New York Times provides some detail. In1996, the Times says, Dickey pushed through legislation that stripped $2.6 million from the budget of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That happened to be the exact amount the center had spent on firearms-related research the year before. The article quotes scientists and former government officials as saying that the NRA has choked off all research on subjects such as whether carrying guns makes people more or less safe.
It's nice that Dickey's gone. Unfortunately, the person who defeated him, Rep. Mike Ross, is also a dutiful servant of the NRA.
