Alabama tries ethics reform

After an influence-peddling scandal involving bingo operators, the Alabama legislature adopted a number of pieces of ethics legislation. The story has a full rundown. A simplified take is that, while reducing the amount of money lobbies can spend on individual legislators, the measures leave open many loopholes for group events, educational events and other ways lobbyists can curry favor with legislators through gratuities. Alabama has, in other words, caught up with Arkansas's porous ethics law.

The only solution is cold turkey.
