The FBI today reported a sharp drop in the violent crime rate nationwide and a smaller drop in property crimes.
That could be good news. At a minimum, it would appear economic hard times haven't increased the crime rate. But I'd be interested in statistics on the size of the young male population. I've read that the crime rate tracks the proportion of young males in the population. Proportion rises; crime rises. And vice versa. It's not about enforcement (clearly not now, with jobs cut from police forces nationwide) or punishment (with prisons bulging and early release a fact of life in places like Arkansas.)
