Strong medicine on the federal budget

The White House fiscal commission — co-chaired by Erskine Bowles and Alan Simpson — released its recommendations draft proposals today. Sacred cows are slaughtered wholesale.

Raise the Social Security retirement age, index benefits to inflation and tax wages beyond the current $106,800 cap. Increase cost of participants in veterans health care. Slash the federal workforce and freeze federal employee pay through 2014. Reduce farm subsidies. End support for public broadcasting. Charge admission at Smithsonian museums and raise park fees. And on and on.

CLARIFICATION: These are the chairs' proposals, not those of the commission itself, which must yet discuss the ideas. Some members are already expressing doubts.
