It's not posted yet, but we'll have an item in this week's paper about a Harding University administrative decision to remove items related to the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure from the campus bookstore. A student complained that the foundation that works to fight breast cancer gives money to Planned Parenthood, which provides abortions in some places.
It's an old religio-conservative scare story (Harding is Church of Christ affiliated). Some Komen affiliates (not in Arkansas, the local affiliate not-so-proudly-in-my-view hastened to trumpet yesterday) give money to Planned Parenthood affiliates because they are the only affordable places in some impoverished areas to get breast cancer screening.
Harding people participate in the annual race. Of course they support breast cancer research. But a smear campaign from a single student drove supporting material out of the bookstore. Too bad.
