Rep. John Boozman, who hopes to succeed Sen. Blanche Lincoln in the Senate, said he would have opposed the military spending bill Tuesday because of amendments paving the way for gays to serve openly in the military and to open citizenship to certain immigrants.
“These are social issues that don’t have anything to do with our troops,” he said.
What part of a division worth of qualified troops dismissed from the service for discriminatory reasons doesn't he understand? Even the amendment about providing a path to citizenship for children of undocumented immigrants does so in part by using military service as a qualifier.
Nothing to do with our troops?
Meanwhile, the legal battles grind on, with some hope the federal courts, as in the 1960s, will deliver on the Constitution's promise when elected representatives prefer discrimination.
