Margaret (501-519-5442) and Jay McEntire (501-519-5443), owners of the Tuf-Nut Shops at River Market Avenue and 3rd Street in the River Market District, announced today that both Brown Sugar Bakeshop and Zin Urban Wine & Beer Bar have signed leases and will open in the Shops around November 1. Construction has started on both spaces.
Sisters Kristi and April Williams operated a very successful cake-decorating business known as April's Cakes for 8 years before opening full-time in the River Market last year. "We learned the tools of the trade from grandmother and great-aunts baking the old-fashioned way," said Kristi Williams. April Williams added, "We loved being in the River Market, but we're ready to open our own place where our culturally diverse customers can enjoy longer hours, a relaxing sitting area, an expanded menu, and better parking.
The new Brown Sugar Bakeshop will combine elements of sophistication with old-fashioned retro. The blending of contemporary with traditional will extend to the dessert menu as well. From Jamaican and Cuban coffees to gourmet cupcakes and country style pies, Brown Sugar is the "Downtown Dessert Destination." They will be open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Visit their website at www.brownsugarbakeshop.com. For more details, call Kristi Williams at 501-993-1030.
Troy Deal and Michael Puckett, River Market residents for over 3 years and boosters for even longer, will open Zin Urban Wine & Beer Bar. Michael is a graphic designer and is responsible for the iconic River Market canvas that adorns the parking deck of the 300 Third Tower. Troy will manage Zin and will share more details as they develop. He can be reached at 501-940-7850.
Jay McEntire pointed out that there are now 12 retailers, restaurants and service providers in the immediate 3rd Street neighborhood. Green Earth Pharmacy is already open next door in the River Market Tower, was joined by Workplace Resource (Herman Miller furniture) this past Monday which will be followed by the opening of Dugan's Pub October 1. Existing businesses include Dizzy's Gypsy Bistro, Copper Grill & Grocery, Joel's Salon, Jasmine Nail Salon, Physique Spa, Lulu's Tanning and the Hampton Inn & Suites.
