The Little Rock police say a woman has been arrested in the kidnapping of a two-year-old child found abandoned early this morning in the bed of a pickup truck on Gaines Street. A resident there called police.

Police said initially that while they were seeking the child, Mariyah Fletcher, they did not believe she was in danger. She had been taken care of in the past by Schamitha Drayer. An initial report said detectives believed Drayer might have been scared to return the child to its family because "she may be in trouble."

SUBSEQUENT LRPD REPORT ON CHILD

Mariyah Fletcher has been located and returned to her mother. On August 27, 2010, at about 3:30 a.m. Eric Buchanan, who rents a garage apartment at 2022 Gaines Street, heard a baby crying. He first thought it was a relative’s child crying. After a few minutes he realized the child was outside and Mr. Buchanan went to check. He found Mariyah in the bed of his pickup truck which was parked in the driveway. He took Mariyah inside and called police and a female friend to come help with her care. Mr. Buchanan gave Mariyah some orange juice and they cleaned her up.

Schamitha Drayer dropped Mariyah off in the bed of the pickup truck and left. This is a random address and has no ties to Drayer or Mariyah’s family. Mariyah was taken to the hospital to be check out and she is doing great. She is now reunited with her mother and family. Detectives will be filing charges against Schamitha Drayer later today. Drayer’s location is still unknown at this time. This could have ended terribly because Mariyah was left in the bed of a pickup truck, exposed to the night air and I understand at 3:30 a.m. the air temp was around 63 degrees (some of your weather guys can probably be more exact) and Mariyah was dressed in very light clothing. Thanks to a very nice and capable person, Eric Buchanan, Miriyah was taken care of very well. We want to thank Eric Buchanan for his great example to every citizen of Little Rock.

ARREST REPORT

At approximately noon today the Arkansas State Police Arrested Schamitha Drayer on I-30 near Prescott, AR. They transported her to the Nevada County Jail. LRPD Detectives and Crime Scene Technicians are enroute to Nevada County to transport Drayer back to Little Rock and process the vehicle she was driving for evidence. Drayer will be charged with Kidnapping and Endangering the Welfare of a Minor in the 1st degree.
