Venting about vending machines

The Arkansas Lottery Commission has called an oral hearing on a proposal to amend the commission's operational rules to include ticket vending machines or TVMs. Members of the public are welcome to comment. The idea that the lottery would eventually roll out these machines isn't really news, plans have been in place for some time and the lottery commission's initial contract with Intralot included a provision for the purchase of 100 TVMs. The hearing will be held in the 3rd floor conference room at the lottery headquarters in the Union Plaza building in downtown Little Rock at 1 p.m. on Thursday, August 19.

Jerry Cox, director of the Family Council, held a press conference at the capitol this afternoon to announce the group had collected 1,164 public comments against allowing the machines (and 31 "for"). Cox and others argue the machines will make it too easy for children to buy tickets. Lottery director Ernie Passailaigue has said not allowing the machines will cost the lottery $5 million in sales per year. My guess is they'll roll out the machines no matter what.
