Parting thought

As we open the line, think on this: At the City Board of Directors' agenda meeting today, Director Keck asked this question:

When, in light of the city's looming $3 million pay raise promise to police, fire and sanitation workers in January, and no obvious sign that sales tax revenues are going to suddenly skyrocket, is the city going to start talking seriously about the 2011 budget? It's time, he noted, to discuss openly whether the city is going to have to lay people off so employees can prepare. City Manager Bruce Moore said he expects to have a timeline on where the city is in budgeting soon; he said figuring out next year's needs are complicated by uncertainty on what the city's insurance needs will be (in light of health reform) and other capital needs.

Director Joan Adcock said after the meeting that she believes there will be general support for a sales tax increase once the public fully understands the city's tight finances.
