KABF, the rough-cut public radio station founded by ACORN, is in financial difficulty and has an emergency board meeting tonight about its future.

Gerard Matthews wrote a media column for this week’s issue. Since it will be out of date by the time it appears, I’ll give you an early look here.

We don’t know all the ins and outs yet, though the latest crisis grew out of the demise of the national ACORN organization (and may be intertwined with that organization’s messy finances.) The operation has always been light on money and long on volunteer help and has never run smoothly. But it has contributed original music programming, lots of grassroots voices, a vibrant Latino segment and a generally healthy “outsider” feel at its spot at 88.3 on the FM dial. Did they once run ASU football games? Or was that a dream?

I hope a plan to salvage this unique voice can be worked out.
