Talking Points Memo calls attention to a blog put-on that, if I know my unreconstructed Southerners and other angry old white men, could go terribly awry. It's a proposal to burn Confederate flags at planned Tea Party rallies Sept. 12.
The idea apparently comes from Jesus' General, a tongue-in-cheek blogger, who in addition to promoting a Confederate flag burning day, is reporting currently on the Mexican takeover of Branson. But he's apparently serious about the flag burning idea. Here's the official website. It explains:
Burn the Confederate Flag Day is a protest against the right's exploitation of racial prejudice for political gain. We urge you to burn the Confederate flag, a long-time symbol of racial hatred, on Sept 12, the date when the racially-divisive Tea Party holds its annual hate fest.
I think I know a newspaper editor who could get all over this. In the name of David O. Dodd, and the SCV, it's time to muster.
SPEAKING OF THE TEA PARTY: This account from Republican Rep. Bob Inglis on his defeat by teabaggers gives you a real flavor of the "movement." He recounts to Mother Jones trying to soothe some of his former financial backers:
"They were upset with me," Inglis recalls. "They are all Glenn Beck watchers." About 90 minutes into the meeting, as he remembers it, "They say, 'Bob, what don't you get? Barack Obama is a socialist, communist Marxist who wants to destroy the American economy so he can take over as dictator. Health care is part of that. And he wants to open up the Mexican border and turn [the US] into a Muslim nation.'" Inglis didn't know how to respond.
