Political trouble brewing in W. Memphis

The story is behind a registration wall, but the West Memphis newspaper yesterday began what apparently will be continuing articles about Fred Smith, Democratic nominee for state representative. The article concerns a state Ethics Commission investigation over failure to file required financial disclosures. But I gather from others that there are other questions about Smith, including residency. Here's the top of the Evening Times' report:

District 54 winner disappears

Where is Fred Smith?

That's been the question plaguing local law enforcement and state ethics officials for more than a month.

Smith, who won the Democratic Party nomination for the District 54 seat in the Arkansas House of Representatives, is currently being investigated by the Arkansas Ethics Commission for failing to file financial disclosure forms from the recent elections, according to documents obtained by the Times. When state ethics officials attempted to reach Smith at the Crawfordsville address he provided on his candidacy forms, they were unsuccessful, according to a person close to the investigation.
