Another "emergency" meeting tonight of the Pulaski County School Board. The ruling quartet is desperate to move the union out of the workplace picture. As if the union somehow is responsible for, oh, corruption in the administration and on the school board, school building collapses, loss of students, perpetual infighting and more.
Here's an idea sure to be quickly ignored: Let the voters speak. Cease hostilities on teacher negotiations until after the September school election. Operate under old contract terms until a new one can be negotiated.
The election will be a clear referendum on recent board decisions. You get the sense — from the emergency meetings, the intransigence in negotiations and the importation of a union-busting New York lawyer — that that's exactly what has the ruling clique nervous.
