It's so hot that it might make it difficult for Llloyd Bright to grown champion watermelons down near Hope this summer.

The New York Times features Hope melons in a feature for the Sunday edition. The opening:

On Friday, temperatures hit 100 in Little Rock, about 100 miles northeast of here, and were expected on Saturday to inch close to the 1934 record of 103 degrees for July 24. With the humidity, it could feel like 110. The conditions produce an effect best described by Dale Nicholson, chairman of the Little Rock television station KATV and a lifelong expert in three-digit Arkansas heat.

“It feels like a big fat duck is sitting on your face,” he said.

It is the kind of heat that compelled organizers of a benefit dinner at the elaborate estate of P. Allen Smith, the gardening star, to advise invitees, “Don’t even bother with hair products.”
