Lost in our long stretch offline: Today, the City of Little and Keep Little Rock Beautiful unveiled new trash containers designed to hold cigarette butts. They'll be placed throughout the River Market and on Main Street.

According to the official release below, they were "purchased with a grant and follow state of art designs that are meant to encourage smokers to refrain from throwing their butts on the ground."

I'm sure their state-of-the-art-ness reveals itself up close.

If you really want to get in the spirit, tonight KLRB members will be handing out pocket ashtrays, like the one pictured, at Gusano's.

The City of Little Rock and Keep Little Rock Beautiful (KLRB) are kicking off an anti-litter campaign today. Representatives from the City's Recycling Department and KLRB will unveil new cigarette butt containers that will be placed in the River Market and on Main Street. These new containers were purchased with a grant and follow state of art designs that are meant to encourage smokers to refrain from throwing their butts on the ground. Also, later tonight, pocket ash trays will be handed out by KLRB members at Gusano's.

Cigarette butts are the most littered item in America. Research shows that many smokers who would not consider littering with other forms of trash often do so with cigarette butts. Most of this kind of littering happens at transition points - where smokers have to put out a cigarette before going on to their next task - like going into a restaurant or getting on a bus. This new campaign which begins today follows guidelines set out by a Keep America Beautiful program which shows a 55% reduction in cigarette butt littering in other cities.
