Lincoln's famous victory

Politico is currently leading with an extensive analysis of Sen. Blanche Lincoln's big win — at least symbolically — in shaping financial reform legislation. It's one of those "tick-tock" stories — the behind-the-scenes process stories so beloved by Beltway journalists if not necessarily by general readers.

The national writers persist in talking about Lincoln's challenge from the left in the primary. Sure, some national leftist organizations opposed her. But it was the Arkansas left that saved her butt at the polls against Bill Halter. But that's a small quibble.

Lincoln couldn't have ordered up a better first paragraph for the story:

In the end Blanche Lincoln stood alone — against Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, even against New York City.

PS — I'd like to add I wrote this item before I received the blast e-mail from the Lincoln campaign highlighting this very paragraph. Not that it took any genius to call it.
