Diversity on federal bench

A Politico story notes that President Obama has appointed an unprecedented number of women and minorities to the federal bench.

Funny: He's nominated two people to our openings in Arkansas so far and both were white men — P.K. Holmes in Fort Smith and Price Marshall for a seat in Little Rock. Nominees for the other two seats were all white in the initial slate sent to the president by Senators Mark Pryor and Blanche Lincoln. Women were in the group for the two seats, two for the seat in South Arkansas and two for the one in Little Rock. It seems likely that both the push for diversity and some internal politicking — particularly on which of the women seeking the two remaining judgeships would be chosen — have slowed progress on White House nominations.

Time's a-wasting, as Snuffy Smith might say. And November elections aren't likely to make it easier for Obama to win approval of nominees in the Senate.
