The three blocks of Commerce Street between President Clinton Avenue and Capitol Avenue will be renamed River Market Avenue in a ceremony this morning. Other River Market neighborhood changes are promised, but no specific projects were mentioned at today's press conference, other than changing the street signs in the River Market district from green to blue.

Somebody be sure to ask Mayor Stodola if he knows where his car keys are.

NEWS RELEASE

Event: Unveiling of New Name & New Street Sign Design for Commerce StreetWho: River Market District Expansion Group
When: Monday, June 7 at 10 a.m.
Where: Corner of 4th and River Market Avenue (formerly Commerce Street)
Participants: Mayor Mark Stodola, City of Little Rock; Sharon Priest, Executive Director for Downtown Little Rock Partnership; and Linda Bortell, Founder and CEO for Green Earth Pharmacy & Wellness Center opening this week in the River Market District

An ad hoc committee, informally known as the River Market District Expansion Group, has been meeting for over a year to discuss ways to expand and build upon the successes of the River Market District.

Changing the name of Commerce Street, from President Clinton Avenue to Capitol Avenue, was one of the recommendations of the group.

“Renaming Commerce Street as River Market Avenue is an acknowledgment of the natural growth that is occurring south from President Clinton Avenue,” said Sharon Priest, executive director for Downtown Little Rock Partnership and a member of the ad hoc River Market Expansion Group.

The unveiling of the new street sign will also reveal a new design for River Market District streets.

More details about the group and its progress and recommendations will be made available at a news conference Monday, June 7 at 10 a.m. at the corner of 4th and River Market Avenue.
