Men catch up

NY Times columnist Charles Blow passes along surprising polling data. For the first time, Gallup finds a majority believe gay and lesbian relations are morally acceptable. Even more surprising is the finding that a greater percentage of men hold that view than women.

Why the change? His theories include that it's harder to discriminate against people you know and more people are coming out. There is the factor of homosexuality turning up among some of the most virulent homophobes (Haggard, Rekers, etc.) Also this:

Men may be becoming more egalitarian in general. As Dr. Kimmel put it: “Men have gotten increasingly comfortable with the presence of, and relative equality of, ‘the other,’ and we’re becoming more accustomed to it. And most men are finding that it has not been a disaster.” The expanding sense of acceptance likely began with the feminist and civil rights movements and is now being extended to the gay rights movement. Dr. Kimmel continued, “The dire predictions for diversity have not only not come true, but, in fact, they’ve been proved the other way.”

We'll see. People always say that the military is the most successfully integrated part of our society in terms of race. You'd think allowing military comrades out of their closets would work just as well, particularly given evolving attitudes.
