Who gives a #$%* what Gunner DeLay thinks? Can't Cecile Bledsoe stand up for herself? This is a Ronald Reagan moment. She should deliver the comeback, not a surrogate.
UPDATE: Bledsoe's statement follows. I think she should have gone for humor.
Fort Smith – Today, former candidate for Third District Congress, Gunner DeLay responded to a press release issued by a representative of Womack for Congress late yesterday afternoon. DeLay described the comments as “sexist and unbecoming a congressman”.
DeLay’s reaction was to the following comment made by Rick Walker, Womack’s media consultant, in reference to Mrs. Bledsoe - “Appears as an aging old woman trying to hang on for dear life. Sad and desperate.”
“Womack's campaign has hit an all time low in Arkansas politics. To refer to Mrs. Bledsoe as an "aging old woman" is outrageous and beyond the pale of common decency and good manners. Throughout the campaign, Mr. Womack has consistently demonstrated an elitist attitude that may serve him well in Rogers City Hall, but not in the halls of congress. I am
certain this is the kind of poor taste we can expect from him if he is elected to congress”, DeLay commented.
DeLay went on, “The voters of the Third District can see right through Womack’s overtly sexist comments. He should issue an immediate apology to Mrs. Bledsoe, and pledge that he and his campaign will refrain from using such off color comments for the remainder of the campaign.”
DeLay concluded that, “Campaigns are about comparing and contrasting the records and positions of the candidates. Anything that provides this information to the voters is fair game. However, anything designed to attack a candidate’s personal qualities such as their appearance, or age should be strictly off limits.”
"I was disappointed to learn that my opponent's campaign had decided to rely on negative comments about my age.
When I read that my opponent's aide had described me as an 'aging woman trying to hang on for dear life,' I was surprised because my opponent has repeatedly claimed he would not engage in such disrespectful behavior.
I've made this campaign about the issues and not about age or our personal lives. My opponent said he would be open to raising federal taxes, and I have signed a no new tax pledge. He has said we should not be "seduced" into thinking ObamaCare can be undone and I have said repeatly one of my main goals will be to repeal it . My opponent has said on numerous occasions that we need to put illegal aliens on a "path to citizenship,"conversely I will continue to oppose amnesty in any form.
Throughout this entire race I've pointed where my opponent and I differ on important issues. I will continue to run an issues-based campaign and I'd ask Mayor Womack to do the same."
