Does courthouse crowd matter?

We may get an answer to that in the land commissioner's race. Following is a news release saying 48 50 county judges have endorsed Monty Davenport. Do grassroots matter much anymore? Or does the 30-second TV ad, with a snappy soundbite, trump all? (Even if the TV is somewhat limited.)

DAVENPORT NEWS RELEASE

The State Land Commissioner plays an integral role in Arkansas county government. County Judges work very closely with the Land Commissioner to ensure the expeditious return of delinquent parcels to county tax rolls, thereby generating more revenue to fund essential county services, such as jails, roads and bridges, and most importantly, our public schools.

As the chief executives officers of our respective counties, we know that we all need someone in the Land Commissioner’s Office who has the maturity and the requisite experience in the real estate industry to get the job done.  We need someone who will be fiscally responsible with our tax dollars, someone who has intimate knowledge of both the state budgetary and legislative processes, and above all else, someone who will protect our property rights.

“I have gotten to know Monty very well over these past few years.  Monty has been a true friend to county government by sponsoring legislation that enables our counties to capture and collect delinquent personal property taxes that may be owed on personal property sold at auctions.  Monty will use his experience, maturity, and knowledge that are so important when it comes to oversight of the complex operations of the Land Commissioner’s Office.  If the people of Arkansas really stop to think about it, I don’t think they would place the constitutional duties entrusted with the Land Commissioner in the hands of a 23-year-old who has had a real estate license for less than six months, and who has never conducted a real estate transaction.  In my book, experience counts.”

-The Honorable Jimmy Hart, Conway County Judge

“Monty and I came into the House of Representatives together, and I have enjoyed serving with him for all of these years. During our time in the legislature, I have witnessed his leadership in the State Capitol.  I know that Monty will continue to lead as our next Land Commissioner.  I look forward to continuing my working relationship with him should I be elected as Garland County Judge in November.”

-The Honorable Rick Saunders, State Representative

We, the undersigned County Judges of Arkansas, have the duty to serve in the best interests of our constituents.  We have the responsibility of managing the daily operation of our respective county governments, and we do so while working with limited county budgets in order to provide safe, clean and prosperous communities for our fellow Arkansans.  We need someone in the Land Commissioner’s Office who has the leadership and the experience to work with us toward our common goals and who will help us to generate additional revenue to fund vital county functions.  For these and many other reasons, we endorse and encourage our fellow Arkansans to vote for Representative Monty Davenport for State Land Commissioner.
