Aerospace Library to close

Tomorrow is the last day for the Aerospace Library branch of the Central Arkansas Library System. A court-ordered temporary reduction in property tax was one factor in the closing, but it was also a lightly used facility in the larger Aerospace Education Center, which has problems of its own.

LIBRARY NEWS RELEASE

The Aerospace Library of the Central Arkansas Library System (CALS) will close permanently at 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 27.

Several full-service libraries are located near the area served by the Aerospace Library. The Main Library, 100 Rock St., is open 9 a.m.–8 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 1-5 p.m. Sunday.  The Sue Cowan Williams Library, 1800 Chester St. is open 10 a.m. -8 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday.  Materials currently checked out from the Aerospace Library may be returned at any CALS branch.

On December 18, 2009, the Arkansas Supreme Court ruled that Pulaski County prematurely applied a property tax increase in 2008 instead of waiting until 2009.  Approximately $1.5 million of property taxes collected in 2008 will have to be refunded by CALS, forcing service reductions including the closing of the Aerospace Library.

Attendance at the facility was down 12 percent in 2009, due in part to a declining population base in its immediate service area.  The Aerospace Library accounted for two percent of CALS’s total circulation in 2009.

CALS libraries in Little Rock include:  Main Library, 100 Rock Street; Dee Brown Library, 6325 Baseline Road; Fletcher Library, 823 North Buchanan Street; Terry Library, 2015 Napa Valley Drive; Thompson Library, 38 Rahling Circle; Williams Library, 1800 Chester Street; and McMath Library, 2100 John Barrow Road. CALS libraries in surrounding communities include: Max Milam Library, 609 Aplin Avenue, Perryville; Maumelle Library, 10 Lake Point Drive, Maumelle; Esther D. Nixon Library, 703 W. Main St., Jacksonville; Amy Sanders Library, 31 Shelby Drive, Sherwood.
