Poll: Halter gains ground

A new Daily Kos poll shows Sen. Blanche Lincoln still leading Bill Halter, 43-35, but by a narrower margin. Significant: She's neither losing nor gaining voters. He's gaining. The question is that big undecided group, 15 percent. As one of them, I find every utterance by one or the other pushes me in the opposite direction, the recent example being their sparring on Social Security. Their positions are virtually identifical though you'd believe from each side that the other would throw granny in the nearest BFI landfill.

I think Lincoln should play to her strengths: deep roots, personal skills and moderation and stop pounding on Halter personally to sway undecideds. But what do I know?

The most significant thing in the poll is the finding that Halter is the stronger of the two candidates against the Republican field. He still trails, but holds all the Repubs under 50 percent.

PS -- And, Sen. Lincoln, re your latest news release: the only people who'll applaud you for winning an award from the evildoers at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce are the similarly venal who are already solidly in your camp. No need to brag about it.
