Cammack Village Police Chief Peter Powell encountered more than an errant driver in the generally peaceful community Saturday. From the Heights Neighborhood Association listserve:

On Saturday afternoon (Feb 21) while on patrol Chief Powell was flagged down by a citizen who reported a subject in a gold colored pickup driving erratically in the area.

Shortly thereafter he located the vehicle and attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the vehicle fled. After a brief pursuit the suspect drove through a yard on East Palisades and fled on foot into the woods above Rebsamen Park.

The suspect actively resisted and was only taken into custody after a struggle. Chief Powell sustained lacerations to his right hand, leg, as well as a human bite to his right forearm. The suspect sustained a laceration to his head and a dislocated shoulder.

Both the suspect and Chief were treated at UAMS and released. Investigation revealed the suspect was under the influence of crack cocaine. The suspect, who had an extensive criminal history was charged with; Fleeing, Resisting Arrest, Battery 2nd, Aggravated Assault, Reckless Driving, DWI-Drugs, and Refusal to Submit.
