A blog commenter last night welcomed Sen. Steve Bryles' potential entry to the 1st District race with a comment on Bryles' current residency in Little Rock. Bryles, term-limited, represents Blytheville and is registered to vote there.
I responded to the commenter later that there is no district residency requirement for members of Congress. They must only be residents of the state they serve. But, of course, there's a potential political issue in residency. I asked Bryles about it. His response:
I saw the comment and know it'll be a campaign issue.
The short answer is, like many state legislators, I maintain housing in LR, and in my case, it's a rental near the Capitol. While my property on Main Street in Blytheville is rented, I am fortunate to have family in town who provide accommodations for me when necessary. ... My roots in the 1st District have been continous for over 150 years. ... I'll not dodge the issue during the campaign.
