Another Democrat for Congress

Ginger Shiras reports in the Harrison Daily Times today that Sen. Randy Laverty may run for Third District Congress if, as expected, U.S. Rep. John Boozman, the Republican, gets in the race for U.S. Senate.

David Whitaker, a Fayetteville lawyer, has already announced as a Democratic candidate.

If his doctors and his wife agree, state Sen. Randy Laverty is thinking about running for the congressional seat being vacated by U. S. Rep. John Boozman of Rogers.

Reached on another matter Friday morning, Laverty, 56, said he would know closer to the March 1 filing date. He said he would not run if Boozman changed his mind about challenging U. S. Sen. Blanche Lincoln.

But when Boozman began considering his run for U. S. Senate, Laverty said he started getting phone calls urging him to run for Boozman’s seat. “I intend to win,” he said, but if he doesn’t he still has three years left on his last term in the state Senate.

Laverty suffered kidney failure and then underwent a liver transplant seven months ago after doctors found two different kinds of liver cancer.

He said one surgeon at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock told him this week that his kidneys and his new liver were “excellent,” and his wife, Virginia, had agreed to consider the race.
