No longer a skit on Conan O’Brien, the prospect of merging school districts 200 miles apart — Weiner and Delight — is officially in the mill. Next stop: Review by the state Board of Education. Gov. Mike Beebe has already indicated his coolness about this effort of the two districts to preserve themselves as they are (and avoid pollution by merger with neighbors).
A fictive administrative consolidation would achieve none of the economies of scale in classes, transportation, lunch rooms, facilities and all the rest that come from bringing together districts of fewer than 350 students. It’s a scam. A flim-flam. A poor example for children.
