USA Drug has succeeded where Walgreens did not — getting approval for plans for a 15,000-square-foot drug store on Main Street between 16th and 17th streets.
Two years ago, Walgreens ran up against neighborhood opposition and rejection by the Capital Zoning District Commission's design review committee. Randy Jeffery, CZDC director, said USA Drug worked with the design committee to draw up its plans.
The store will be built on the east side of Main with 84 parking spaces on 16th, 17th and Scott streets. A corner entrance will be on the south side of the building. The Box, a legendary burger joint, and a commercial building dating to the 1960s that stand there now will be demolished; USA Drug is also buying the parking lot on the north side of the commercial building from Leverett and Watts law firm.
The plans will go before the Mansion Advisory Committee on Jan. 26. The CZDC will consider the plans at its meeting at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 28 at 410 S. Battery St.
