I'm told Gov. Mike Beebe shortly will announce the appointment of Vicki Saviers of Little Rock to the state Board of Education to succeed Randy Lawson of Bentonville.
Relevant background in an ongoing issue for the board concerning applications for charter schools in Pulaski County: She's a member of the board that oversees the eStem charter schools in Little Rock. An annual award named for her is given there each year to the outstanding educator. She's also been active in the Public Education Foundation of Little Rock, which provides support to the Little Rock School District.
UPDATE: Saviers' appointment has now been announced. Gov. Beebe announced several other appointments today, including one that might be of interest to Supreme Court watchers.
Whit Fowlkes of Mountain View was appointed as special justice to replace Justice Paul Danielson, who disqualified himself from the important case by the Hempstead County Hunting Club against the PSC over American Electric Power's coal-fired power plant.
