The search for a Central High football coach to succeed Bernie Cox is over.
After talking to a current assistant and a coach at Helena-West Helena, among others, Little Rock school oficials settled on Ellis "Scooter" Register, head coach at Little Rock Catholic, for the coaching job. He's led the Rockets for six years and previous coaching stints include Little Rock McClellan and El Dorado. He was announced at a news conference Tuesday afternoon at the school, though we reported his selection here first Monday night
Register's team will throw the football. He'll also work to staunch a flow of top players from the rich Central zone to other schools. His goal is the state championship that has so far eluded him in his coaching career. After a couple of winless seasons, Central can use the excitement.
A spectator at Register's news conference quoted him as saying he saw Central as the state's "flagship school" and that it needs to be strong in football to help the UA, ASU and UCA. He saw a challenge in leaving Catholic and the "opportunity to make a difference in the lives of young men by getting in the hallways and encouraging them to get on the field."He guaranteed at least one victory next year.
