Told you so

As expected, the Republicans, while moaning about the cost of health care reform,  ALSO are blasting Blanche Lincoln for failing to put some more pork in the bill for Arkansas. Isn't slaying of the public option good enough for them?

Good afternoon – just wanted to ensure that you saw the following statement from Democrat Senate Leader Harry Reid, in which he blasts Blanche Lincoln and other Democrat Senators who did not get payouts for their home states during the backroom negotiations for his costly and contentious health care bill.
According to Politico: “Reid (D-Nev.) offered a vigorous defense Monday of the deals in the Senate reform bill that benefit individual states, saying ‘it doesn’t speak well’ of senators who didn’t secure such deals…”
In reporting on this, please consider the following response from the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC):
“Harry Reid threw Blanche Lincoln and her Democrat colleagues under the bus just as quickly as Lincoln threw Arkansans under the bus when she voted for Reid’s health care bill in the dead of night. Not only is Lincoln preparing to vote for a bill that will lead to higher taxes, cuts to Medicare, and higher premiums for families, but she is rubber-stamping a series of sweetheart deals for other states that will be paid for at the expense of Arkansas. While it’s not often that we can say we agree with Harry Reid, he does have a point: Blanche Lincoln’s failed leadership on health care does not ‘speak well’ of her at all, and we’re confident that voters in Arkansas will reject Lincoln’s ineffectiveness on Election Day next November.” – Amber Wilkerson Marchand, NRSC Press Secretary
As additional background information:
·         “As part of the deal to win Democratic Sen. Ben Nelson's support, the federal government will fund Nebraska's new Medicaid recipients. It's a provision worth about $45 million over the first decade.” (Chris Frates, “Ben Nelson's Medicaid deal,” Politico, 12/19/09)

·         “A $100 million item for construction of a university hospital was inserted in the Senate health care bill at the request of Sen. Christopher Dodd, D-Conn., who faces a difficult re-election campaign, his office said Sunday night.” (Associated Press, “Health bill money for hospital sought by Dodd,” 12/20/09)

·         “A few days ago, Sen. Bernie Sanders was not on board with the emerging Senate bill saying, ‘I have real concerns.’ But Sanders sounded more upbeat about the prospects of supporting the bill this morning after he crowed about landing additional Medicaid funding for six years and $10 billion for community health centers.” (Jake Sherman, “Sanders gets funding for community health centers,” Politico, 12/19/09)

·         “Reid already has established a dangerous precedent, by dangling $300 million in Medicaid funding for Louisiana to win Landrieu's support for bringing the bill to the Senate floor.” (Shailagh Murray, “Reid’s recipe for getting health-care deal done,” Washington Post, 12/04/09)
