Much reminiscing this weekend about the Big Shootout, Hogs v. Longhorns in Fayetteville before God, Richard Nixon and everybody else 40 years ago. I was a college freshman in Virginia. I had a date from a nearby women’s college. She was from El Dorado. She brought along a god-awful red hat, shaped like a Hog. She was a very nice girl, hat or no hat. She was very sad at the end of the afternoon.
Two more things about the Big Shootout:
1) Census data indicates nearlythe majority of the people in Arkansas today weren’t born in 1969. Hard as it is to believe, the game will be more easily forgotten as the years go by.
2) Here’s an interview from Razorback Expats, former Ark. Times bloggers, with Terry Frei, who wrote the definitive book, “Horns, Hogs and Nixon Coming,” about the game and the tumultuous times. Nice reading for a slow Sunday afternoon.
