Move Halloween for Hog game?

Silly season in Fayetteville. Some folks are lobbying the mayor there to "move" Halloween (Saturday, Oct. 31), because it's the same night as a Razorback game.

The Fayettevillage Voice blog finds little merit in the idea. (Our own experience is that moving Halloween because it falls on Sunday or otherwise conflicts with some other habitual events is a bad idea because there's no way for everyone to get the message. Plus, Halloween IS, well, Oct. 31.) The Voice says:

The City and the Visitors' Bureau are providing an alternative Halloween celebration on the square from 3:00-5:00 on Friday afternoon. There will be all sorts of fun and games. According to the newspaper report, the mayor will show up and give away candy. But that won't do. Nice try, but it isn't what is being demanded.

Instead, these citizens want the local government to meddle in something that is none of government's business on the claim of necessity or convenience. They want the mayor to order people to take their kids out to extort candy on Friday instead of Saturday and require everyone else to be home with a large supply of candy corn to appease the little masked terrorists. Big government as Big Brother.

It is laughable that anyone would even think to make such a request.
