There's a long, hard road from floating an idea for a constitutional amendment to getting it on the ballot. But heads up on a mailing from the misnamed Arkansas Progressive Group, which wants to impose in Arkansas the most regressive tax you could possibly imagine. They'd amend the constitution to eliminate ALL state taxes except a retail-level-only sales tax. A flat tax, in other words.
Progressive? It's a giveaway to business and the wealthy, a punishing lick for the poor. The unintended consequences are so many that the powerful lobbies will join hands with the impoverished for once to defeat the idea, should it make the ballot. There are many reasons it should not, beginning with the impermissibly broad sweep of subjects it would cover.
