If you dont get well ...

... you don't owe me a dime.

Interesting report on NPR this morning raises questions about our system of paying doctors per procecdure, with no consideration for results.

I got a stunning estimate for oven repair yesterday, but I was assured I wouldn't have to pay if it didn't fix my ancient wall ovens. If only doctors would be so kind on diagnostic and treatment charges.

I couldn't help but recall a $40,000 heart procedure I had some years ago. Didn't work. I got to do it over. Same price.

Anyway, U.S. Rep. Vic Snyder, a physician, was quoted in NPR piece.

Rep. Vic Snyder (D-AR), who is also a physician, says the fee-for-service model is unsustainable. But, he says he has hopes for the health care legislation before Congress, which he calls a work in progress.

"Whatever the final version is," Snyder says, "we'll have this discussion maybe after the president's ink is drying on the document. Then we'll say, 'Well, was it a little nudge? A big nudge?' But it will be a nudge in the direction of more efficient delivery of health care services in a way that rewards quality [and] fairly reimburses providers."
