Dog shooter arrested


Man in Baxter County shoots a dog with a .22 rifle. Charged with misdemeanor.


On August 25, 2009, at approximately 3 pm, deputies from the Baxter County Sheriff’s Office responded to a disturbance on Bonnie Lassie Lane, in the City of Briarcliff, Arkansas.
     Sgt. Andy Bower responded to the call and after further investigation it was determined that the suspect, 24 year old Steven Michael Bass, had shot a neighbor’s dog that was in his yard.  Mr. Bass stated to Sgt. Bower that he nor his dogs were in any danger and did not feel threatened by the dog.
     Sgt. Bower also discovered that Mr. Bass had an Order of Protection out of Independence County, Arkansas which stated he was not to possess any firearms.  Sgt. Bower seized a 22 caliber rifle.  Steven Bass was arrested and charged him with:
Cruelty to Animals                      Class A Misdemeanor
Violation of a Protection Order     Class A Misdemeanor
     He was transported to the Baxter County Detention Center, where he posted a bond of $1250 and was released pending his court appearance at 9 am on September 10 in Baxter County District Court.
     The animal is currently being treated by a local veterinarian, but is exptected to survive the gunshot.
