Family values senator

This slow morning I think it's worth linking to a bit more detailed account than the morning paper carried on the latest family values Republican politician to fall on his, er, sword.

Tenn. State Sen. Paul Stanley, a Sunday school teacher from suburban Memphis (Germantown) has a great resume. Former employee of the Stanford financial group. Met his current wife when she was an intern for U.S. Sen. Bill Frist. Accused in court of physically abusing his previous wife. Sponsored legislation to prevent gay people from adopting.

And when a Planned Parenthood official recently sought his support for family planning services for Memphis teens, Stanley told her, according to the official, that he "didn't believe young people should have sex before marriage anyway, that his faith and church are important to him, and he wants to promote abstinence."

A clumsy blackmail attempt directed at Stanley over nekkid pictures he'd taken of his recent intern paramour led to his resignation yesterday.

The former senator's wife has issued forgiveness for his dalliance with the college junior. Or so he says. And, as Arkansas Blogger notes, the young woman has declined an interview, but provided photos of herself to the Commercial Appeal, one of which is shown.
