Boondoggle anyone?

KATV's Jason Pederson dug up another piece of state government work apparently in need of improvement. He reported last night that a specialty license plate program set up to purchase computers for students had raised $700,000 in eight years but had largely been a bust in producing promised computers .

Students are even waiting in vain for the little $30 study aids (sort of electronic flash cards) that now are being offered to students in place of the computers originally promised for good attendance and test scores.

We were given access to a limited amount of receipts, purchase orders and tax returns.

Operational costs and salary expenses have eaten up close to $200 thousand over the years…which would still leave half-a-million for prizes.

It appears the Arkansas Committed to Education Foundation simply underestimated the amount of students who would qualify and overestimated the amount of money the sale of the specialty plates would generate.
