Glad I checked in. I came across another dandy report on Daily Beast by John Avlon, a Giuliani Republican, on the fight to lead the national organization of Young Republicans. As you know, an Arkansas native, 38-year-old Audra Shay, narrowly won the contest Saturday at the Indianapolis convention, despite a spate of reports here and elsewhere about racist remarks she and supporters had made on social network sites.
Shay won, but not before the "true conservatives" who backed her resisted a secret ballot vote on favor of something resembling card check. Not before some gay baiting of the opposition candidate because she happens to support civil unions. Not before some near fisticuffs. Etc. It is a great thing for us all that aging, unreconstructed, homphobic Southern bullies constitute the youth movement of the Republican Party. The arc of the political universe does not bend in their direction.
