OB/GYN fraud?

Here's a story, which, for now, raises more questions than answers.

The U.S. attorney's office announced today that it had searched Dr. Kelly Shrum's office in Pine Bluff, the Arkansas Center for Women, and found a version of the  intrauterine device, Mirena, that has not been approved for use in the U.S. by the FDA. A news release said, absent FDA approval, it's not known if the birth control device is safe or effective and that it believes some versions made for distribution outside the U.S. might have been given to Shrum's patients. A news release said patients are being contacted by mail. It  said urged women who'd received treatment there to contact the FDA or primary care physicians.

The U.S. attorney's office said the investigation was ongoing and it would not answer further questions.

I can add this: the doctor has been temporarily suspended from the state Medicaid program because of a fraud investigation and patients have been notified.
