So much for special privileges at the Little Rock National Airport.
Effective at 9 p.m. tonight, Clear, the VIP paid special privileges security clearance line went out of business, apparently because the company is going under.
Funny. I'd just read a travel column yesterday that said the Clear service was terribly overrated, in part because it hadn't widely caught on, in part because airport security at most airports had improved. Plus, Clear customers were also being made at some places to submit to the same security measures -- shoes and belts off, etc. -- that others had to endure. The humanity!
I'm sad to read the airport might like to find another vendor of VIP services for those with spare bucks. I hope not. I've been through a number of major airports this year that find no need to create two-class service in a publicly financed facility in the name of making a little extra money.
At 9:00 p.m.on June 22, 2009, Clear® will cease operations at Little Rock National Airport. Clear’s parent company, Verified Identity Pass, Inc. has been unable to negotiate an agreement with its senior creditor to continue operations.
Clear customers will receive e-mails from the company making them aware of the action and to provide them with contact information or further details.
The Clear Registered Traveler Program provided members with a biometric identity card that allowed them expedited access through airport security checkpoints for an annual fee of $99.95. Once pre-screened and approved by the Transportation Security Administration, applicants started their membership at flyclear.com and completed the process in person at an enrollment center.
Clear opened in 2004 and served 20 airports around the country. Clear announced the opening of the local enrollment center at Little Rock National Airport in August, 2007.
