A legislative oversight committee today approved the pay for new Lottery Director Ernie Passailaigue. He'll go from $226,000 to $432,000 income a year (counting South Carolina retirement pay he'll now be able to draw on top of $324,000 Arkansas salary.) I think you can live on that in Arkansas.
Peeps? Not really and no member of the committee voted no. Sen. Johnny Key asked how the high pay would affect plans for pay in other positions, particularly a No. 2 job -- a chief operating officer -- that could conceivably have been paid nearly as much as the CEO. Commission Chairman Ray Thornton said Ernie perhaps could handle both jobs. (See, the two jobs were created in line with the original plan to hire a good ol' Arkie with no lottery experience to serve as CEO/legislative liaison and then to hire somebody with experience to do the real lottery work.)
Thanks to Capsearch for the live coverage on Twitter.
PS -- It was made clear that $324K was just salary. Benefits aren't included in the cost. But he'll qualify for the usual state options, I presume.
