The federal stimulus program includes, it turns out, a $38,000 contract for Goodwill Industries of Arkansas to provide free assistance to people having difficulty figuring out the transition to digital TV. As Dave Barry always said, I am not making this up.
(On a somewhat more stimulating note, Arkansas will get $1.4 million to buy police and fire equipment and other hard goods.)
[LITTLE ROCK, AR] – The Federal Communications Commission has awarded a contract to Goodwill Industries of Arkansas to provide free walk-in support centers and demonstration clinics for those in need of additional assistance to successfully complete the digital television (DTV) transition on June 12, 2009.
Centers will be located inside Goodwill stores in North Little Rock, Conway, Russellville, and Texarkana. Each location will also host several demonstration clinics at local libraries. The Commission wants to ensure that everyone in our community, including those with disabilities, seniors, people for whom English is not their first language, and others in need of assistance are able to successfully complete this transition. Goodwill will provide this service free of charge to those with the greatest need in our community, working in partnership with civic and community organizations.
“We are excited to be taking part in this important initiative,” said Brian Itzkowitz, President & CEO of Goodwill Industries of Arkansas. “We look forward to helping our friends and neighbors throughout Arkansas take full advantage of this free program.”
The program was created and funded by the economic stimulus bill, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, designed to jumpstart the economy, put Americans to work, and provide much needed services to our community.
