U.S. Rep. Vic Snyder spoke in the House yesterday in support of a resolution marking the sinking of the Sultana, a riverboat overloaded with Union soldiers, that sank near Memphis in April 1865. Some 1,800 were killed in what remains the country's worst maritime disaster.

The episode hasn't been wholly overlooked (and the remains of the boat still lie beneath farmland in eastern Arkansas.) The Arkansas Times wrote a fine story on the sinking many years ago. It's still available in a book of history articles we published, "A History of Arkansas in Stories and Pictures." You can still order it from anitra@arktimes.com
