A strange news story developing in Northwest Arkansas. A man is dead after reportedly cutting his own throat after being taken into custody by a Fayetteville Wal-Mart employee for alleged shoplifting.
He's David McElyea, said to be a "marijuana moonshiner" who wrote about his experiences in Madison County in "When Money Grew on Trees."
UPDATE: Arkansas Blogger digs up what appears to be relevant history. A David McElyea was stopped once before for shoplifting at a Wal-Mart. He was convicted of a robbery charge for hitting an employee who'd tried to stop him from fleeing. The Arkansas Supreme Court upheld the robbery conviction. McElyea contended he should have been guilty only of theft.
